US Open of Surfing

This is the biggest and most stressful project I've yet to work on, but I learned a great deal; how to be yelled at by strangers over the telephone, sacrificing social life for work, missing gym appointments and compensating by workout overloads, and losing sleep.
Everything you see here has at some point changed through my hands, and I ended up doing the brunt of production on over 200+ signs. On the other hand, I did have some customizable graphics at one of booths (the first things with my actual name attached to it), which means some rich tween is wearing my graphics...and isn't that what really matters?
I did have the opportunity to attend, but opted to spend the week fly fishing in Colorado.

2010 US OPEN OF SURFING

Bishop Gorman High has one of the top rank high school football teams in the country. This project evolved as a side project while working on some UFC stuff. Apparently Dana White was a player at BGHS back in the day, and still gives a lot of support to the school/team. We came up with a lot of stuff, but these dudes are the most interesting. I'm not much of a football fan, but mascot iconography (?) is fun. The football face is modeled after their mascot costume.

I've never really drawn a pinup before...it was a new experience. Drawing the human form is difficult; creating it from scratch is quite bizarre. I'm thinking of adding this to another drawing I'm thinking about, turning it into nose-art or something like that...

ASPC Face Scans

I found these photos while I was cleaning out my backup drive. I started this project about halfway through the last school year. I tried to get everyone in the office to do it, but for whatever reason, a few people refused. These pictures are taken from scanner, and the subjects are rotating their head with the light. The results are a bit silly, but we had fun tacking all of the results to the ceiling of the "cave."...I think they're still there.

WWU Senior Show

These are from June, but I just forgot to put them online...because I know you're all SO interested. We were told that professionals would be around to check out our stuff. I met one dude from Wong Doody, but he didn't give me his name. Out of about 50 or so design grads, two or three have jobs, and two or three have unpaid-internships...the rest of us live with our parents.

VU Mascots

This project started last August. The VU Marketing Intern wanted cartoony Viking Mascots for the Viking Union. 8 Months later and about 15 significant project changes later, they wanted photo-realistic squirrels wearing WWU t-shirts... All I can say is, clients are weird sometimes. As of last week, they scrapped this project.

This is my first professional offset print project...that's new. Also, apparently Dan Savage hates it, as it makes him look "old." One of his staff commented, "that's a bloody-horrible likeness." Hah!

SFO - Studio Tours

I spent this week in San Fransisco touring a bunch of studios. For the most part, they told us how great they were, and how the economy is bleak. Thus working at said studios was out of the question. I did see some interesting design work, and some of the owners offered some really great advice and inspiration.

Helvetica Neue

Helvetica is most likely the most overused font in the west. It also happens to be one of my favorite fonts to work with, as it works with just about anything. Many people say Helvetica is boring, but I say, Helvetica is only boring, if you are boring.

Just a concert poster for AS Pop Music. Originally I had an illustration of Jenny in a bright yellow cosmonaut suit, surrounded by cute space bugs...that was shot down due to being, "too weird." It's not a complete loss however, I can still use the suit-drawing for something much more interesting.

Interesting side note: Jenny Lewis was the little girl in "The Wizard," co-staring Ben Savage.

Student Chapter AIGA T-Shirt

The Bellingham student-chapter of AIGA is having a t-shirt competition right now. We were just told to do whatever we wanted, so long as we include "AIGA" somewhere in the design. This is my submission.

Methodman & Redman

I was given the contract to work on all the concert series parafanalia for the Methodman/Redman; Posters, handbills, signage for the web, and signage for the digital display boards around campus. It was a lot of fun, but stressful at times working with a client who really has specific things in mind...and wanted to feel creative. I was able to find a compromise with him.

The idea was to print half of the posters one way, and half the other (see pics), but the printing center on campus botched the order, so we only got prints of the version with Methodman on top.

Senior Studio

As you can see, in the age of the laptop, many people do not work in the studio. I enjoy this a great deal, as I can play my own music and keep the halogen lights off.

AIGA Design Contest

The AIGA Bellingham chapter is holding an advocacy issue, poster-design contest. It's pretty much open to anything, provided you take a stance on something... This is basically what I'm submitting, but I may add a few bullet holes in the wall or something. I was excited to work on this, but I've been looking/working on it all weekend, so It's looking stale to me.
